Installing on Windows XP

Installing the SIM Business Package on Win 2000/XP

These instructions are provided by Andrew Smith.

A. Get the files.

Get the business package program files from the http://tech.sim.org  or http://www.servinginmission.com/simtech/index.html site called:

BUSPKG530D.ZIP
DBL441.ZIP

Extract BUSPKG530D.ZIP to C:\BUSPKG

Extract DBL441.ZIP.ZIP to C:\DBL

NB the extraction process will create and populate the correct directories on your C: drive. Also, if you used a CDR to transfer the ZIP files, remember to turn off READ-ONLY on all the files in JCFILE and GLFILE on the target machine after copying.

B. Configure Windows.

Once you have copied over the two main directories (C:\dbl and C:\buspkg) successfully to your C: drive do the following:

1.  Edit the config.sys file and add one line:

a) To do this click on the Start button, select Programs, then Accessories, then Notepad - and Notepad editor should appear on the screen.

b) In Notepad, click on File, Open, and then in the "Files of Type" drop-down box select ALL FILES.

c) Then in the "File Name" box type in the following:  C:\config.sys

d) On the top menu click on OPEN - you should see the contents of the C:\config.sys file.

e) In the main Notepad window add one line to this file that says:

 device=c:\windows\system32\ansi.sys

f) On the top menu click on File, then Save.

g) Then click on File, Exit.

Then reboot the computer.  As it restarts look for any error messages just in case something is wrong.

2.  Now you need to edit another file called C:\Autoexec.bat:

a) To do this click on the Start button, select Programs, then Accessories, then Notepad - and Notepad editor should appear on the screen.

b) In Notepad, click on File, Open, and then in the "Files of Type" drop-down box select ALL FILES.

c) Then in the "File Name" box type in the following:  C:\autoexec.bat

d) On the top menu click on OPEN - you should see the contents of the C:\autoexec.bat file.

e) Look for a line in this file that says:  PATH

(eg: path c:\windows\command;c:\windows).

f) Ensure the following PATH statement is included:

path c:\windows\system32;c:\windows;c:\bat;c:\dbl

g) On the top menu click on File, then Save.

h) Then click on File, Exit.

Then reboot the computer.  As it restarts look for any error messages just in case something is wrong.

C. Configure the software.

Copy C:\BUSPKG\BAT\*.*  to C:\BAT\

1.  Next set-up a short-cut on the desktop to run the Business Package:

a)  Open up Windows Explorer (Right click :Start, click Explore)

b)  Click on C:\BAT\

c)  Look for a file called:  Shortcut to Menuc.bat  Right click the mouse on this file and choose COPY

d)  Close down Windows Explorer and right click the mouse on the main Desktop area on your screen

e)  Select PASTE  and you should see a new icon appear on the screen (Shortcut to menuc.bat)

f)  Right click on this new icon and choose PROPERTIES

g)  Click on the tab titled MEMORY. Change the Initial Environment setting to 1024 and click on OK.

Run the BAT file MAKESIM.BAT in the C:\BUSPKG\JCSRCE\ directory by double-clicking it (this will create the DBR files ; you will see a black DOS screen and files being processed)

Now the business package should run by double-clicking the new shortcut on the desktop.
